Lápis-Lazúli is the first solo exhibition by DaCosta, a contemporary Portuguese artist. Open to the public at the Taguspark Central Hub from November 17 to January 7, Lápis-Lazúli reveals a classic-contemporary approach to Portuguese tiles, respecting the production methodology of the 15th-century tile masters.
In this unprecedented presentation by DaCosta, we find the "domin0 series," a posthumous tribute to personalities such as Amália Rodrigues, Mahatma Ghandi, and Albert Einstein, among others.
Curated by Adilson Lima (Tapumarte) and Beatriz Palma (MAU – Museu de Arte Urbana), Lápis-Lazúli is an exhibition whose name refers to a precious stone, which, in addition to being associated with spiritual, energetic, and physical healing, brings love, peace, and enlightenment. This exhibition also features an interventionist piece that critiques society, in the form of a tile panel created specifically to showcase the author's satirical vision.
For DaCosta, “Lápis-Lazúli displays seven figures! Seven pieces crafted in shades of blue that create a visual game to ‘play’ with our individual perception of each of the personalities represented here. In terms of symbolism, the number seven is the most prevalent in philosophy and sacred literature, symbolizing perfection, power, and also renewal. It symbolizes the renewal of the heritage of Portuguese tiles. To achieve the unique aesthetic result of the tile, the perfect communion of the four elements is necessary, and this process is considered by ceramics lovers to be something magical. And it is this magic that I want to spread throughout the world on a journey that begins here..."
With free admission, the exhibition is part of the MAU - Museum of Urban Art program, which aims to promote critical thinking and contribute to the well-being of those who visit and work in the City of Knowledge.
