MAU - Museu de Arte Urbana do Taguspark and SNBA - Sociedade Nacional de Belas-Artes have concluded the selection process for the second edition of the MAU-SNBA Artist Residencies.
The five artists who will experience the disruptive, bold and urban spirit that defines the City of Knowledge are: Carlos Stock, Cristina Gil, Filipa Vilela, Tadeu and Tim Madeira.
Carlos Stock, artistically known as Kiã, uses spray cans, brushes and spatulas as his tools to create works on gables, walls, canvases and floors. In the Residency, he intends to materialize, through an installation, the memory of the last demolished shack in Bairro da Torre.
From an early age, Cristina Gil understood that painting is her favorite form of communication and that her geometric compositions reflect her interpretation of stories, to which she adds oil pastel. In the MAU-SNBA Artist Residency, she intends to develop a visual narrative that stimulates reflections on how objects shape our understanding of space and time.
Filipa Vilela explores "Alvaria", a kinetic machine created to reveal the unpredictable and organic characteristics of daily journeys. During the residency she will develop "Maps in Motion", a visual creation that reveals the unpredictable and organic characteristics of daily journeys, the uniqueness of each route and the complexity of transportation networks.
Tadeu, inspired by the invisible traces that sustain matter and spirit, proposes to carry out, during his stay at the Artist Residency, a visual reflection on what truly unites atoms, quarks and cosmic dust: Love Particles, understood as a vital and primordial force.
Tim Madeira, with an approach that promotes creative dialog between painting, poetry and writing, will, during the Artist Residency, create bridges and, above all, unity at the heart of the residency, where two large canvases by him will serve as the basis for a collective work in constant transformation. In addition to the residents, guest artists from the fields of painting, poetry and writing will expand the dialogue, enriching the conceptual and sensory dimension
For Eduardo Baptista Correia, CEO of Taguspark, "the MAU-SNBA Artist Residencies are a reflection of Taguspark's commitment to innovation, creativity and fun as pillars of a more critical, sensitive and aware society. The presence of these five new artists reinforces the purpose of MAU - Museum of Urban Art as a space for experimentation, dialog and creative freedom, in the heart of the City of Knowledge."
João Paulo Queiroz, president of the Sociedade Nacional de Belas-Artes, highlights the success of the first edition of the Residencies and emphasizes the role and opportunity that these initiatives have for emerging and non-emerging artists, while at the same time "making it possible to broaden the access of the community and the Park's workers to other forms of artistic expression".
Lasting four months, the MAU-SNBA Artist Residencies are already on the agenda of artists - individual and collective - as a space to deepen their artistic practice around a theme previously defined in the application.
The 3rd edition of the MAU-SNBA Artist Residencies is scheduled for September 8 and applications are open until June 23 - proposals should be sent to ra@taguspark.pt. The full regulations are available here.
